WOMEN’S FARM COOPERATIVE
NEAR UVIRA
Traditionally, the women of Munene, a village near Uvira in Eastern DRC, made little fields for themselves in the neighboring forests, but that has become very dangerous because of the guerrilla militias that infest the forests. Women are often attacked when going into the forest to gather wood to sell, or working in their fields a distance from home. Over 100 women from Munene and a neighboring village were raped and some were killed before Woman, Cradle of Abundance was able to purchase two pieces of property near Munene in 2020. Now the women run their own farm cooperative, planting and harvesting in sight of their homes, in safety. In 2021 a small flour mill and generator were donated to enable the women to grind their manioc and corn and offer this service to their neighbors.
